About Sandakan Spirit

Selamat datang ke Roh Sandakan.

Founded in 2006 by intrepid explorer, Wayne Wetherall, Sandakan Spirit began with the notion that every journey to the exotic island state of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo should be infused with myriad adventures and exceptional memories.

Since the company’s inception, Sandakan Spirit has developed a number of unique adventure programmes, tours and itineraries, each showcasing the natural beauty and mystique of Sabah — one of the two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo, as well as the spiritual trail of the harrowing, World War II Sandakan Death Marches.

aboutusAdditionally, each programme offers a number of optional experiences where guests are able to tap into a once fierce yet magnetic indigenous island culture, coalesce with exotic wildlife — most notably at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, trek the dense jungles that nurture unique species of flora, birds and reptiles, run a white-water rapid, cruise Sabah’s mangrove swamps and climb to the summit of Gurung Kinabalu — the window of Malaysian Borneo.

No two treks are alike, with each programme encapsulating the very spirit of Sabah, considered to be one of the most idyllic and unspoiled locales in Southeast Asia.

Simply, Sandakan Spirit is a profound and inspirational journey of a lifetime.

In 2015, Sandakan Spirit will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and retell the heart-rendering POW Death Marches — the first which began in 1944 at Sandakan’s notorious Japanese POW camp and ended tragically on the trek to Ranau near Gunung Kinabalu.

Every programme provides guests with expert guides, trackers, porters, meals and accommodation along with a comprehensive checklist that includes access / purchase of equipment, an overview of health regulations and fitness tips, and other essential information. Sandakan Spirit is also covered by public liability insurance.

Sandakan Spirit is a subsidiary of Wild Spirit Adventures, a special interest travel company that showcases unsurpassed trekking programmes for intrepid adventurers visiting Nepal and Kenya. Our other trekking division includes Kokoda Spirit.

Every programme produced by Wild Spirit Adventures and its sister companies incorporate a CSR footprint and the strictest code of ethics for the host country’s local customs and their respective laws.

A trek that has been tailored for the hardiest of souls, Kokoda Spirit captures the adventure and intoxicating culture of New Guinea and the history and legacy of the heroic Australian soldiers and native guides — known as Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, who braved the once-treacherous elements of the Kokoda Trail during World War II. One of the most formidable frontiers in the world, not only will you follow in the footsteps of these courageous men, you will also meet the various tribes and villagers along the Kokoda Trail and hear the stories of mateship, courage and true grit that has passed into Australian legend.
